In Pennsylvania, there are 28 state prisons, thirty years
ago there was 8. From 1997 to 2007, the number of
incarcerated inmates has increased 31.6%. Pennsylvania
general population increased less than 5%.

There are about 14,000 inmates in Pennsylvania’s 15
federal prisons.
